You can also add blank sublayers if required by clicking the Create New Sublayer icon. Refer to Figure 8-4.

Figure 8-4. Create a New Sublayer in the Layers panel
To remove a selected layer or sublayer, you can select it and press the Delete Selection trash can icon. The layer or sublayer is then removed. If the layer contains artwork, you may get a warning message. Select Yes if you want to delete the layer or No to cancel the deletion. Refer to Figure 8-5.

Figure 8-5. Delete a layer or sublayer in the layer and the warning message
Select the layer you want to draw your paths or shapes on. Anything on top will be above the other layers. Refer to Figure 8-6.

Figure 8-6. Review layer order in the Layers panel
Layers can be moved above or below each other if you drag them in the Layers panel up or down. As well, sublayers can be dragged out of one layer into another. Refer to Figure 8-7.

Figure 8-7. Move layers or sublayers up or down in the Layers panel
Another way to move shapes from layer to layer is to, while the item is selected, drag on the colored square on the layer which indicates the selected art. This can then be dragged above the sublayer or out of the current layer into another. Refer to Figure 8-8.

Figure 8-8. Use the square in the Layers panel to move sublayers to other layers
Note The circle beside each layer (the targeted path), when it is a double circle or filled double circle, indicates the appearance of that shape or path. In this case, a cyan star has a cyan fill and a black stroke. You can move the appearance of the shape to another shape by dragging the double circle dot onto a single-dot-filled or hollow form to alter the appearance of another shape in the Layers panel.
Or Alt/Option+Drag when you want the original shape to keep its appearance as well. We will look at altering appearance and graphic styles later in this chapter. Here I Alt/Option dragged the dot from the star up on the rectangle layer sublayer, and now the rectangle has the same appearance colors as the star. Refer to Figure 8-9.
